Shuksan 2011

Just to the SE of Mt. Baker is Mt. Shuksan, a large massif that has the distinction of being the most photographed mountain in the northern Cascades. It owes that to being in full view of the Mt. Baker ski area. It is a stunning 3-sided, pyramidal feature with all the hallmarks of a Swiss Alp peak. We’ve been up Fisher Chimneys, Sulphide Glacier, but tried in vein getting to the fabled north side and on its “classic” North Face. Thwarted by images of a nightmarish approach through rainforest brush it got put to the back-burner. Not so this July. Record snow depths made access literally a “walk-in-the-park” and with Margaret as a climbing partner, assured success.
